For Ahkeem follows Black teenager Daje Shelton as she comes of age in a rough part of St. Louis, not far from Ferguson, where Michael Brown was shot in August 2014. After a school fight lands Daje in a court-supervised alternative high school, she's determined to turn things around and make a better future for herself. But focusing on school is tough as she loses multiple friends to gun violence, falls in love with a boy for the first time and becomes pregnant. Through Daje’s intimate coming-of-age story, emmy-winning filmmakers, Jeremy S. Levine and Landon Van Soest, illuminate the challenges that many Black teenagers face in America today, and witness the strength, resilience, and determination it takes to survive.
Producer Iyabo Boyd is a guest of the festival and will take part in a Q&A after the screening.
